The Mission

Woodhaven Fire Department needed a frontline pumper capable of serving busy highway corridors while accommodating specialized rescue equipment—all within strict size limitations.

The challenge wasn't simply selecting features. It was fitting everything the department needed into a compact apparatus without sacrificing storage, water capacity, or firefighter safety.


The Challenge

The department required:

  • A low hosebed

  • Overall apparatus length restrictions

  • Full hydraulic rescue tool storage

  • Maximum compartment space

  • 1,000-gallon water capacity

  • Safe top-mount pump operation for highway incidents

Meeting one of those goals is straightforward.

Meeting all of them in one apparatus required a custom design.

The Spencer Solution

Spencer's Solid-Poly body gave the design team the flexibility to rethink the apparatus layout instead of forcing the department into a standard configuration.

The custom design incorporated:

  • A full-depth rescue compartment for hydraulic tools

  • Through-the-tank ladder and pike pole storage

  • A low hosebed

  • Integrated rear handrails

  • A top-mount pump panel for improved operator visibility

  • A full 1,000-gallon water tank

Rather than compromising one requirement to satisfy another, the apparatus was engineered around the department's operational priorities.

Operational Impact

The result is a pumper that supports highway operations while maximizing storage, maintaining water capacity, and improving firefighter access to rescue equipment.

It demonstrates Spencer's philosophy that custom apparatus should adapt to the department—not the other way around.
